Date & Time:
The event will be held rain or shine at the Paddy's Creek Section of Lake James State Park on May 18th at 8:00am. On-site registration and packet pickup will be available from 6:00 - 7:30am. The race organizer reserves the right to postpone the event due to severe weather. There is a 3 hour, 30 minute limit for completion of the course. (Back to Top)
Day of Race Schedule:
5:30pm-7:00pm (Friday night) - Early packet pickup is available at the Lake James State Park office area.
6:00-7:30am - Onsite registration available.
8:00am - Simultaneous Triathlon and Duathlon start!

You must be a current USA Triathlon member and present a current USAT membership card at packet-pickup. Those who don't have their card or who are not USAT members, must purchase a one-day membership for $12.
All proceeds benefit the McDowell Trails Association, whose mission is "To partner with any agency, organization, or group of individuals to establish greenways, blueways, and non-motorized trails in McDowell County." (Back to Top)
All participants must finish the event in under 3 hours, 30 minutes. Race officials reserve the right to remove any participant from the course who it deems unlikely to finish the event within the stated time limit.

Triathlon and Duathlon awards will be given to the top 3 individual Male & Female, top 3 individual Male & Female Masters, top 3 Male & Female finishers in each age group, and the top Male, Female, and Co-Ed team (triathlon only). Age group awards will be given in the following categories: 19 & under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70 & over. (Back to Top)

The Paddy's Creek Section of Lake James State Park is located in Burke and McDowell counties, five miles northeast of Marion off NC 126.
Traveling east on I-40
From I-40, take the Nebo/Lake James exit (exit 90) and head north.
After a half mile, turn right onto Harmony Grove Road, and follow it for 2 miles to a stoplight. Proceed straight across the intersection and past Nebo Elementary School to a stop sign.
Turn right onto NC 126, and follow the signs to the park entrance on the right, after you cross the bridge.
Traveling west on I-40
From I-40, take the Dysartsville/Lake James exit (exit 94) north for 0.5 mile to a stop sign.
Turn left onto US 70 and follow it for 1.5 miles.
Turn right onto Bridgewater Road and travel 1.2 miles. Turn left onto Benfield’s Landing Road, and follow it for 2 miles to a stop sign.
Turn right onto NC 126, and follow the signs to State Park entrance. (Back to Top)

We're sorry, but entry fees to this event are not refundable. The MTA reserves the right to postpone or cancel the event under any conditions which, in its sole discretion, it deems unsafe to participants, volunteers, or the public.
The water temperature at the Paddy's Creek Section of Lake James will be measured periodically and reported on this web site. The water temperature will be measured for a final time on race day.
Photography services for this year's MTA Triathlon & Duathlon at Lake James is provided by Mountain View Photography. Laminated finish line photos will be available for purchase at the race.

||The triathlon swim (750 meters) features a wave start and follows an open water course on Lake James.
||The first duathlon run (4.1 miles), concurrent with the triathlon swim, follows a non-technical trail on state park property with minimal pavement.
||The ride (22 miles) is a well-marked, on-road course consisting of 4 miles on state park property and an 18 mile loop with views of the lake all along the way.
||The run (5K) is mostly on non-technical dirt trail with approximately 1/4 to 1/2 mile of pavement. The triathlon and duathlon share the same final run course.
